Hi Jean Robb here, with the holidays getting so close I wanted to remind you of a great charity helping those who really need a helping hand. These are hard working people who's lives have taken a turn and forced them to ask for help. I always try to remember that it could be me or you in the same position. Every once in a while during my trips I get to hear some great stories of Americans that have successfully made it back on their feet with the help of our food bank network. Through their determination and the guidance of their local food pantry, shelter, or soup kitchen, these people have reclaimed a semblence of security in their lives.

Lisa and David - Revisited

Massachusetts

Lisa, David and their five children are just some of those folks. I first spoke to Lisa two years ago, right after David found a job with a copy machine company. Lisa, David, and the four children they had at the time had just emerged from a troubling summer during the beginning of the recession. The college-educated parents decided to close a decades-old family-owned auto repair business due to a severe decrease in revenue. They were bankrupt with very little options.

The two turned to Gloucester’s Open Door Food Pantry (formerly the Cape Anne/ Open Door Pantry) for food assistance as they tried to put their lives back together. As David looked diligently for a new job, his family relied on the agency of the Greater Boston Food Bank for nutrition and other useful resources.

Two years later, the family is far from where they started. They have a lot to be thankful for, including David’s recent promotion and the birth of their new baby girl, Grace. I recently decided to visit the family in order to catch up and hear their inspirational story.

Feed your mind.

In many ways, America is the land of plenty. But for 1 in 6 Americans, hunger is a reality. Many people believe that the problems associated with hunger are confined to small pockets of society, certain areas of the country, or certain neighborhoods, but the reality is much different.

Right now, millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. We all know and are in contact with people affected by hunger, even though we might not be aware of it.

These are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days. Most of us simply have no idea. It’s time to educate ourselves about the causes of hunger in America.
